What Happens When You Teach Peace? One School Shows Us

School children visiting The World Peace Flame in North Wales

Across the schools we work with, the World Peace Flame (WPF) education pack is doing far more than supporting lessons – it’s helping to shape school cultures. Sheila Roberts, who has worked closely with teachers and pupils to introduce the pack, has seen first-hand how these resources come to life in the classroom – and beyond.

A Resource Teachers Truly Value

For Sheila, one thing stands out immediately: the response from teachers.

Described as “a teacher’s dream,” the WPF education pack is filled with colourful, engaging and practical ideas that make it easy to bring peace education into everyday learning. Its flexibility allows teachers to adapt activities to suit their pupils, while still encouraging meaningful reflection on kindness, empathy and understanding.

Rather than adding pressure, the pack supports creativity – giving teachers the freedom to make the content their own while keeping pupils fully engaged.

Seeing the Impact First-Hand

Having visited many schools over the years, Sheila has witnessed something powerful: the way small actions begin to ripple outward.

In classrooms using the WPF education pack, there is a noticeable emphasis on friendship, kindness and inclusion. These aren’t just ideas being discussed – they are behaviours being practised. Pupils support one another, show greater awareness of others’ feelings, and carry these attitudes beyond the school gates.

“You can see how friendship and kindness spread within the school and beyond – into homes and into the community,” Sheila reflects.

A School That Brought It to Life: Ysgol Llanllechid

One school that has truly embraced the WPF education pack is Ysgol Llanllechid, in Gwynedd, North Wales. Known locally for its strong sense of community, the school is led by a dedicated team committed to ensuring every child feels supported and valued.

During a recent visit, Sheila and colleagues were invited to attend a Peace Assembly – an experience that captured the spirit of the programme in action.

Pupils from three different classes presented work they had developed through the “Peace in Your Hands” activities. Each group approached the theme of peace in their own creative way.

One class shared a beautifully written prayer, bringing together each pupil’s personal hopes for peace. Another performed the story of the Lion and the Mouse, throwing themselves into the drama with energy and enthusiasm. A third group presented their research into the story of the World Peace Flame, delivering an illustrated talk with sincerity and pride.

What stood out was not just the quality of the work, but the sense of ownership. The pupils had clearly connected with the message and made it their own.

A Moment That Stayed with Us

The assembly ended with something simple, yet deeply moving – the children sang.

From the moment they join the school, music is part of everyday life at Ysgol Llanllechid. As their voices filled the room, there was a genuine sense of joy and unity. The message of peace, carried through their singing, resonated with everyone present.

It was a powerful reminder that peace education is not only about learning – it’s about feeling, expressing, and sharing.

From Learning to Action

Perhaps most inspiring of all was what happened next.

A few weeks after the assembly, the pupils decided to organise a coffee morning to raise money for the World Peace Flame charity. With support from teachers and families, they took the lead in planning the event.

They secured a local venue, reached out to nearby shops for donations, and created handmade lavender pouches to sell. Invitations were written and shared with the community, and on the day, the hall was full.

The pupils welcomed guests, served refreshments, and even provided entertainment through song. By the end of the morning, they had raised £250.

More importantly, they had taken what they had learned and turned it into meaningful action.

Why This Matters

Sheila’s experiences highlight something important: peace education is most effective when it moves beyond theory.

Through the WPF education pack, pupils are not only learning about peace – they are living it. They are developing empathy, building stronger relationships, and discovering that their actions, however small, can make a real difference.

In schools like Ysgol Llanllechid, this learning doesn’t stop at the classroom door. It extends into families, communities, and everyday life.

And that is where lasting change begins.
