Solan Public School Strengthens Culture of Peace Through Student-Led Initiatives

In the serene hills of Himachal Pradesh, Solan Public School continues to demonstrate how education can become a powerful vehicle for peacebuilding. As a registered World Peace Flame Peace School, SPS has been actively nurturing values of empathy, respect, and kindness among its students since 2021—translating global ideals into meaningful local action.

Building on its pioneering role as the first school in India to host a solar-powered World Peace Flame monument—unveiled on Gandhi Jayanti in 2022—the school has continued to expand its peace education programme with renewed energy in 2026.

A Term of Meaningful Engagement

The first term of the current academic year has seen a vibrant series of activities designed to engage students meaningfully and embed peace in everyday school life. Central to these efforts were Peace Circle Discussions, where students practiced active listening and respectful dialogue, creating a safe space to share perspectives and build mutual understanding.

On 8 March 2026, the school community came together for a powerful symbolic event—the SPS Peace Walk, themed as The SPS Pink Walk—held in celebration of International Women’s Day. Students, teachers, and parents participated side by side, carrying banners with messages of peace and expressing solidarity through gestures such as white handkerchiefs and flowers. The walk not only honoured women but reinforced the connection between equality and peace.

 

 

Creativity as a Pathway to Peace

SPS has also placed strong emphasis on creative expression as a tool for reflection and growth. On 13 March, students collaborated to build a “Peace Tree,” contributing leaves inscribed with acts of kindness—forming a collective visual reminder that peace begins with individual actions.

 

This spirit continued through Peace Poster Making activities, where themes such as “Peace Begins with Me” and “Say No to Bullying” were brought vividly to life, showcasing both artistic talent and social awareness.

The following day, 14 March, the school community participated in a “Gratitude Wall” initiative. Students wrote heartfelt notes to peers and teachers, fostering a culture of appreciation and strengthening interpersonal bonds across the campus.

A Growing Impact

These initiatives have been met with enthusiastic participation, reflecting a strong student commitment to building a positive and inclusive environment. Teachers report noticeable growth in emotional awareness, empathy, and cooperative behaviour among students.

SPS’s ongoing collaboration with the World Peace Flame Foundation—including visits and workshops from international representatives—continues to enrich the programme, connecting local action with a global movement for peace.
